In my make-shift photo studio
“Shooting the collection was an adventure in itself, because it was a one-woman show I had to coordinate carefully. For the indoor section, I had to adjust the layout of most of the furniture in my living room, because I needed a certain distance between the camera and the model, in order to use a specific lens. I had to be resourceful with the setup - the backdrop needed to be wider than what was available to buy, so I used a huge piece of fabric (which I can later use to make a garment). In terms of timing, I really wanted to have a window-light effect, so the photoshoot had to take place during the few sunny moments of a gloomy November morning. Nine looks, several styling options, no stylist on set, it sure was crazy, but I was very happy with the results in the end. Whenever I tell people I took the pictures in my living room, they are very surprised, so mission accomplished, I guess.
The other photoshoots were realised outside, which gave me a lot more freedom of movement, but November was wet and moody, so the difficult part was travelling with all the outfits and having my mother, grandmother and cousin model them with care, in the rain. The location was my grandparents’ garden - it was perfectly untamed and overgrown. Mature, in a way. It was the perfect fit for the last cycle of life I wanted to portray in my collection.”
